Sons of Promise

MENTORSHIP & EDUCATION

The Sons of Promise seeks to provide a network of support for middle school boys of color (ages 9-13) through relevant academic, career and social experiences that will ensure their success academically, socially and professionally through workshops, exploratory learning, sports and mentoring.

Over the past three years, Eight Million Stories (8MS) has concentrated its work on closing the opportunity gaps for traditionally underserved youth in Houston, particularly those disconnected from school and work. In the process of helping our youth overcome many obstacles, we uncovered, that for many of the young men we serve, their challenges in school and life began in middle school and in some cases earlier.

These conversations led us to begin to think about ways in which we can begin to get ahead of the issues that we are seeing locally with our boys of color, especially our Black boys, who are fast tracked from our schools into the juvenile justice system.

The Sons of Promise Pledge & Principles

We will always adhere to our core principles in our dealings with our brothers, sisters, family, teachers, community and ourselves.

“This organization changed my life. I’m in college because of them. I started my business because of them. I’ve done so much because of these people, had so many opportunities, met so many mentors just because of this organization. “
